What 2 words could make a NEO owner happier than "Calibration succeeded" ? I successfully calibrated my NEO
today after the touchscreen had started misreporting location. I'm not guaranteeing this will work for everyone,
but it worked for me.
A few months ago, I noticed that my touchscreen was not working right for the bottom half of the screen.
I tried to recalibrate it, but it failed. So, I decided to reset the NEO and upload the latest firmware.
Well, once you update the firmware, you can't use your NEO until you have successfully calibrated it.
So, now that my touchscreen doesn't work for the bottom half of the screen, I can't complete the calibration
test, so my NEO is stuck in an endless loop of trying to calibrate and getting the dreaded "calibration failed" message.
After doing some searching, I found that lots of other NEO owners had the same problem. I decided to open up my NEO -
as it was out of warranty - and see if any cables/wires were loose. Everything looked fine. I found a thread on
remotecentral.com where someone had commented that the ribbon cable for the touchscreen on his remote was severed
over time and he was able to repair it and restore his touchscreen. My ribbon cable appeared fine.
I decided to remove the ribbon cable and reconnect it to make sure it was connected properly. I then put it back
together and was able to successfully calibrate it on the first try!
Repairing your Pronto NEO
To open the NEO, you need a small torx screwdriver, or a small allen wrench.
Matthew T in the UK sent me an email indicating he used a T6 to open his Neo - which he repaired after reading this page.
If you have a small enough allen wrench, you will be able to remove the screws. The smallest torx driver
I had was a T9, which is too big. That is why I used an allen wrench.
There are 4 screws on the bottom
of the NEO. Two of them are covered by the Philips sticker. Once you remove the screws, you will need a small flathead screwdriver
to pry open the case. There is a plastic clip inside the case near the contrast button that broke on mine, but it
doesn't matter.
After opening the case, be careful handling the NEO because the touchscreen/LCD isn't fastened to the PCB. It just sits on top of it and
is only connected by the 2 ribbon cables. The small ribbon cable controls the touchscreen ( glass plate on top of the LCD screen ).
The large ribbon cable controls the LCD screen. The LCD and touchscreen are fastened together and should not be separated.
Carefully flip the touchscreen/LCD over as shown in the picture. To disconnect the ribbon cable for the touchscreen,
take a small screwdriver and gently pry open the plastic connector highlighted
in the yellow circle. The connector doesn't come off, you just want to open it enough so you can pull out the ribbon
cable. Now, gently push the ribbon cable back in as far as you can and close the connector.
Put the NEO back in the case bottom and put the batteries back in. You don't need to put the cover back on to test the
calibration.
Hopefully, your NEO will calibrate now. Let me know if this works for you.
